How to Start Learning ServiceNow Administration

ServiceNow Administration is a useful starting point for understanding how work is represented on the platform. Begin with the relationship between a table, a record, a list and a form. A table holds a collection of records; a list lets people review that collection; a form helps them read or update one record. Knowing the purpose of each view makes later exercises easier to follow.

Practice with a simple support request

Imagine a facilities team collecting maintenance requests. Plan the fields the team needs: request type, location, description and an appropriate contact method. For each field, decide whether it is required, who supplies it and how it will help the team act. Avoid collecting information that has no purpose in the exercise.

  1. Describe the user problem in one sentence.
  2. List the fields and explain each field’s purpose.
  3. Define the users or groups who should work on the request.
  4. Test the form with a normal example and an incomplete example.

Explain what you have learned

Describe how the record moves through the process and how you checked the result. Treat users, groups, roles and access controls as separate concepts to investigate with your trainer. Seeing a screen does not by itself prove that the access design is correct. Use an authorised training environment for implementation practice.

ServiceNow ITSM: Follow an Incident from Report to Resolution

When an employee cannot use a service, the support team needs enough context to begin an investigation. An incident record brings the report, affected service, ownership and progress together. The goal is to restore service and communicate clearly, rather than simply move a ticket between queues.

Build a useful incident description

Use a hypothetical example: an employee cannot access a shared application. Record what they were trying to do, what they observed, when the issue began and which users appear to be affected. Distinguish facts from assumptions. A precise description helps the next team continue the investigation without repeating every question.

  1. Capture the reported symptoms and affected service.
  2. Consider impact and urgency using the organisation’s agreed rules.
  3. Choose the team responsible for the next investigation step.
  4. Write a short progress update for the requester.
  5. Describe the restoration check and resolution evidence.

Check the exception path

What happens if the assigned team needs more information, or the requester says the problem remains? Include a follow-up path in your exercise. Incident, problem, change and service request processes have different purposes; discuss those differences during trainer-led learning instead of treating every ticket as the same type of work.

ServiceNow CMDB: Understand Service Dependencies

A business service may depend on an application, a database and supporting infrastructure. A configuration management database records configuration items and relationships so teams can reason about that environment. Its usefulness depends on accurate, maintained information and a clear understanding of where the data came from.

Map a hypothetical learning portal

Draw a small dependency map for a training portal. Identify the application and the components it relies on. For each item, write its purpose, the source of its information and who would validate it. Start with a small, understandable example rather than collecting large amounts of data without a plan.

  1. Name the service and define the scope of the map.
  2. Identify the supporting configuration items.
  3. Describe the relationships in plain language.
  4. Record an owner and a validation source.
  5. Explain how changes would be reviewed.

Ask what the map can tell you

If a supporting component is unavailable, what investigation questions become easier to ask? Also consider what an outdated relationship could get wrong. The exercise is about reasoning with service context, not claiming that a diagram automatically proves the cause of an incident. Ask your trainer how CMDB concepts connect to ITSM and other modules in the learning path.

Guide 04 · ITOM

IT Operations Management: A Practical Starting Point

Connect service operations with the infrastructure that supports them. Use this introductory exercise to connect the topic with a workplace scenario.

Your practice scenario

An application becomes unavailable during a busy working day. Map its supporting components and plan how the operations team would investigate.

Try this exercise

  1. Identify the service, application and supporting infrastructure in a small example.
  2. List the signals that would help a team understand the interruption.
  3. Separate observed facts from possible causes.
  4. Write an investigation handoff with ownership and the next action.

Check your understanding

Explain how your service map helps prioritise investigation, and what information still needs validation.

Discuss implementation, prerequisites and current module coverage with your trainer during a demo.

Guide 05 · ITAM

IT Asset Management: A Practical Starting Point

Think through the lifecycle of hardware and software assets. Use this introductory exercise to connect the topic with a workplace scenario.

Your practice scenario

A new employee needs a laptop. Plan how the organisation would record its allocation, ownership, return and retirement.

Try this exercise

  1. Create a sample asset record using invented training data.
  2. Track the owner, lifecycle stage and assignment history.
  3. Describe what changes when the laptop is returned or reassigned.
  4. Plan a review for missing or inconsistent information.

Check your understanding

Explain the difference between tracking an asset’s lifecycle and describing a configuration item’s service relationships.

Guide 06 · HRSD

HR Service Delivery: A Practical Starting Point

Plan clear employee service requests and onboarding journeys. Use this introductory exercise to connect the topic with a workplace scenario.

Your practice scenario

An employee joins a company and needs help with onboarding. Design a simple request journey with a clear owner and appropriate access.

Try this exercise

  1. List the employee’s questions and the services they need.
  2. Define the information required for a sample request.
  3. Assign responsibility for each onboarding task.
  4. Describe how the employee receives progress updates.

Check your understanding

Use invented employee data. Explain who should see the request and how you would check that sensitive details reach only the appropriate team.

Guide 07 · Agentic AI

Agentic AI in Service Workflows: A Practical Starting Point

Explore how an AI-assisted workflow could plan tasks with clear boundaries. Use this introductory exercise to connect the topic with a workplace scenario.

Your practice scenario

Imagine an assistant that helps a support team prepare a ticket summary and suggest a next step. Define its inputs, allowed actions and points where a person reviews the result.

Try this exercise

  1. Define one narrow task and a measurable success condition.
  2. List the information the assistant may use.
  3. Identify actions that require a person’s approval.
  4. Test an incomplete request and an incorrect suggestion.

Check your understanding

Compare the assistant’s output with the original request. Explain how the workflow handles uncertainty, errors and escalation to a person.

Discuss implementation, prerequisites and current module coverage with your trainer during a demo.
